About 1Password:

Over 150,000 businesses and millions of people log in to 1Password to unlock smart, simple access to everything they care about. Our vision is to create a safer, simpler digital future for everyone, and our culture values simplicity, honesty and a human-centric approach to solving problems. Come help us unlock peace of mind so everyone can stay safer online.
Our Data Infrastructure organization provides the platform, pipelines, and data transformations that powers our use of data across the company. These are the underpinnings that will allow us to deliver on our mission of transforming data into smarter actions.
1Password is looking for a senior organizational leader to our Data Infrastructure org, which includes data platform, data engineering, and analytics engineering. As the organizational lead, you will be responsible for scaling the organization and overhauling our data infrastructure. You’ll work with your team as well as senior leaders across the company to define and execute the roadmap for the organization to deliver on our vision for data at the company. You’ll have the opportunity to engage with executives from all functions at 1Password to ensure we are delivering on their data needs. You will be doing all of this as we rapidly expand our product portfolio, introducing new complexities around our use of data
For this role, you can be located within the US or Canada, and will be expected to be fully remote, ideally in the EST timezone.

What we're looking for:

  • Experience leading large teams of managers and data engineers (25+)
  • A passion for building inclusive and collaborative teams, with experience hiring both managers and senior engineers, as well mentoring leaders on both the technical and management tracks.
  • Over 5 years of experience managing engineers, including at least 3 years of managing managers.
  • Experience managing multiple engineering teams, as well as delivering projects that span multiple teams.
  • Able to effectively work with, collaborate, and negotiate with peers across engineering and business organizations.
  • Able to navigate conversations with multiple stakeholders, ensuring alignment and understanding across many levels of the company.
  • The ability to interact with internal customers with ease and help translate their feedback into actionable tooling requests.
  • Previous experience as a hands-on engineer building resilient and reliable data systems, such that you'll be able to participate in technical discussions and understand the work that is going on in your organization. Use these experiences to empower the team to make tough technical decisions.
  • Have a strong understanding of the tools and processes used in modern data environments.
  • An excellent set of written and oral communication skills, able to drive discussions with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • An ability to describe projects that you or the team is working on with confidence and depth of understanding, becoming a spokesperson for the team within the company and outside as well.
  • An ability to operate autonomously, effectively prioritize projects and information, and make good judgment calls. Have a demonstrated ability to scope and lead complex multi-team initiatives.
  • Experience in one or more of the following:
  • Building reliable, performant, and efficient data platforms
  • Developing data pipelines and transformations
  • Bonus points for:
  • Experience working with, or ideally managing, remote teams in multiple geographies.
  • Experience building frameworks or services that other development teams can leverage.
  • Experience completing or leading teams performing data analytics.
  • Experience working with DBT, Looker, Athena, Meltano, Metabase, and Looker.

What you can expect:

  • Support and set strategic direction for a set of teams that builds the data infrastructure that powers the use of data at 1Password.
  • Drive alignment and be responsible for the results of the teams in support of broader company objectives.
  • Collaborate with senior individual contributors to create a roadmap to deliver on a technical vision, balancing the needs of future enhancements and maintenance of existing solutions.
  • Work with cross-functional partners to define the best solutions for internal customers.
  • Resolve dependencies and contention with other engineering and business teams to deliver the highest priority projects.
  • Grow technical contributors and managers to reach their potential.
  • Recruit and retain top tier talent in a fast growing environment.
Even if you don't tick all those boxes, we want to hear from you. We understand that everyone's experiences are unique.
The most important thing you can bring to this job is the drive to dive in, get the work done, and fix root causes instead of treating symptoms. If you bring a desire to do the right thing for our customers, a sense of ownership over the product you work on, and a focus on shipping quality code, we want to hear from you.
