Description
We’re hiring a Principal Product Designer to help shape the future of Slack. Principal Designers are leaders within our teams — humble, thoughtful, and highly collaborative. They set product direction, raise the bar for design quality, and carry features from early vision through execution and launch, continually prototyping and refining to ensure they work for Slack’s diverse user base.
As the team responsible for messages, channels, the sidebar, and activity, Messaging sits at the heart of Slack’s core experience. Our mission is to elevate Slack back to a best-in-class messaging platform by reducing noise, improving clarity, and helping every user feel in control of their workspace.
In this role, you’ll help define the future of how people communicate in Slack — bringing more structure to conversations and developing intelligent, scalable features across our most important surfaces. You’ll work with designers across Messaging, AI, and the broader Slack team to architect cross-surface solutions that bring greater structure, coherence, and scalability to the way people work in Slack.
At Slack, we have a positive, diverse, and encouraging culture. We look for people who are curious, inventive, and work to be a little better every single day!
What you will be doing
- Work cross-functionally with product and engineering partners to represent the design team, facilitate design discussions, and ensure design quality.
- Collaborate closely with leadership to define features and influence the overall direction of your product area, and with Design Leadership to inform and improve our design processes
- Design flows, prototypes, sketches, and high-fidelity UI for experiments and features
- Work closely with Engineering to ensure a high-quality implementation and user experience at throughout every phase of a project, and iterate rapidly upon receiving feedback
- Lead by example - do excellent work and help people on the team learn how you do it
- Encourage trust-building and feedback culture. Provide kind and clear feedback to the team, and solicit feedback from peers, including other product designers and cross-functional partners
- Identify overlap or connections across initiatives across the team and company, and ensure we are building a cohesive end-to-end user experience across the product
- Be an active mentor for other designers, interview new designers and actively advise on our design hiring process.
What you should have
- 10+ years of experience in an individual contributor role, on a Product Design team for desktop or mobile, delivering products from start to finish as part of a cross-functional team
- Deep understanding of system-level work, with a proven track record of delivering scalable solutions across product surfaces
- An outstanding portfolio, showcasing a strong foundation in typography, interaction, and visual design
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, agile environment with a focus on experimentation and rapid iteration (Think: balancing design quality with speed)
- Ability to explore ideas, persuade others, and build consensus on fast-moving projects with varying degrees of ambiguity
- Experience partnering with product managers to translate data and insights into strategy and rationale for design solutions
- Experience working and collaborating across diverse teams (i.e. Research & Analytics, CE, Marketing) in a dynamic, rapid growth environment
- Experience with prototyping as a means to explore and convey design solutions
- Self-motivated. Able to work proactively, drive initiatives, and discover new opportunities independently
- Strong written/verbal communication and active listening skills, with an ability to build and develop trust across relationships
- Nice to have: experience in messaging / chat products
