Why this role exists:

The Financial Controller is a senior leadership role within the Finance and CFO function responsible for providing strategic oversight and management of the Financial Control function leading teams across financial accounting, accounts payable and receivable, taxation, and audit. By ensuring technically compliant reporting and robust governance, the Financial Controller enables the business to meet its statutory obligations and provides the executive team with the accurate data necessary to drive commercial performance.

In this role you will:

Financial Control& Statutory Reporting:

  • Lead the Financial Control team to ensure the accurate, timely, and technically compliant preparation and validation of all management and statutory financial information.
  • Ensure the precise preparation and reconciliation of all taxation information, including Income Tax, FBT, Payroll Tax, and BAS lodgements.
  • Manage the monthly submission of financial results to Wesfarmers Group Accounting, ensuring all data meets Group policies and deadlines.
  • Oversee the operation of Accounts Payable and Receivable, ensuring timely payments to suppliers and collection of monies from customers.

Governance, Risk & Audit:

  • Oversee the design and execution of the audit program to safeguard assets and ensure internal control integrity.
  • Manage relationships with internal and external auditors, facilitating smooth audit cycles and addressing findings proactively.
  • Ensure compliance with all statutory and Group Accounting policies, maintaining the business's regulatory standing.
  • Integrate compliance requirements into everyday business practices and planning to mitigate enterprise risk.

Strategic Leadership & High-Performance Culture:

  • Provide strategic leadership to the Financial Control function, aligning departmental KPIs with overall business objectives.
  • Lead and develop a high-performance team environment, offering development opportunities that drive outstanding levels of performance.
  • Coach and mentor team members, promoting a leadership style that is engaging, motivating, and in line with our cultural values.
  • Ensure the function recruits and retains appropriately qualified expertise to support the delivery of business plans.

Process Improvement & Systems Transformation:

  • Proactively develop systems and procedural changes that enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the Financial Control function.
  • Question the status quo and drive the improvement of existing financial processes and systems.
  • Collaborate across business units to influence commercial outcomes and drive system-wide transformations.

Safety & Ethical Conduct:

  • Accountable for a safe site for everyone, every day, implementing safe work practices and managing safety issues immediately.
  • Ensure all tasks and activities are conducted in accordance with Trade PracticesLaws and applicable legislation.

Qualification and Work Experience:

Essential

  • Education: CPA / CA Qualified.
  • Experience: 15+ years in financial accounting related roles with 5+ years of senior leadership experience in a large, complex organization.
  • Technical Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of technical accounting standards.
  • Leadership Skills: Proven ability to influence senior leaders, develop people, and present complex information concisely.
  • System Proficiency: Strong experience with SAP (including BW), Power BI, and MicrosoftOffice Suite.

Preferred:

  • Industry Context: Experience within the retail industry is highly desirable.
  • Transformation Experience: Demonstrated experience driving system and process transformations.
