We're looking for a Principal Backend Software Engineer to join our team, focused on delivering creative improvements for our engineering team and cloud platform. You'll be part of the Micros PaaS team and report to an Engineering Manager.

Your Future Team

All Atlassian services (over a thousand micro-services) that power products like Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket, Trello, OpsGenie, Atlas, etc. run on an internal highly opinionated PaaS compute infrastructure called Micros. Micros team is responsible to build this planet scale PaaS and ensure all these services are safely deployed and managed globally, expansion into new customer regions including regulated spaces with data residency/FedRAMP requirements. As a Principal engineer in the team you will be responsible for building global scale Micros services to manage, optimize, secure, scale, authenticate, service discoverability, hosting of these services over AWS and GCP providing 99.99 uptime.


  • Regularly tackle the largest and most complex problems on the team, from technical design to launch

  • Take ownership of the implementation of large software projects, with an emphasis on quality, test-driven development, and sound software engineering practices

  • Review code with best practices of readability, testing patterns, documentation, reliability, security, and performance considerations in mind

  • Be part of an amazing open and collaborative work environment with other experienced engineers, architects, technical product managers, and designers.

  • You will report to the Engineering Manager

  • Mentor and level up the skills of your teammates by sharing your expertise in knowledge sharing sessions

  • Participate in Agile software development including daily stand-ups, sprint planning, team retrospectives, show and tell demo sessions


  • Strong technical expertise and 10+ years of experience in designing/building enterprise-grade backend applications using micro services.

  • Bachelor's or Masters in Computer science in a related technical field or similar experience

  • An expert in at least one technical topic/domain

  • Principal-level experience with one or more prominent languages such as Kotlin, Java, Python, Typescript, or Go is required.

  • Experience crafting and implementing well-tested, highly scalable and performant micro-services and/or other distributed systems

  • Understanding of SaaS, PaaS, IaaS industry with hands-on experience with public cloud offerings (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure)

  • Experience in Infrastructure as Code (AWS CloudFormation, Terraform, Ansible) Experience in observability solution (e.g. SignalFX, Splunk)

  • Knowledge of container technologies (Docker, Kubernetes) Practical knowledge of agile software development methodologies (e.g., XP, scrum, TDD, Mobbing)

  • Knowledge to evaluate trade-offs between correctness, robustness, performance, space and time Consider the customer impact when making technical decisions
