Role Overview:

The Vice President of Communications will build and scale the communications function at CHAOS, owning the company’s narrative during a pivotal moment for both the company and the broader defense technology sector.

This is a unique opportunity to architect the communications strategy for a category-defining defense technology company and shape how CHAOS shows up across defense, government, technology, and commercial audiences.

In this role, you will work closely with a deeply experienced and dynamic leadership team to tell CHAOS’s story to multiple stakeholders, from warfighters and policymakers to engineers, investors, and commercial partners. You will deepen existing media and influencer relationships, build new ones, and communicate why CHAOS’s work matters and how it fits into the future of defense, government, and dual-use commercial applications.

This role is best suited for someone who is a proven team player in a collaborative, low-ego environment, but who can also operate autonomously without rigorous oversight, and bring a strong and well-reasoned point of view.

Responsibilities:

  • Shape, guide, and execute communication strategies: collaborate with internal leadership team to design and implement internal and external communication plans that align with mission objectives and contribute to overall company success.
  • Expand and deepen media and influencer relationships: Build, strengthen, and manage relationships with key reporters, editors, analysts, and influencers across defense, national security, technology, policy, and business media. Proactively identify opportunities to tell CHAOS’s story, shape the conversation around the future of defense technology, and position CHAOS as a trusted, expert voice in the ecosystem.
  • Evaluate communication effectiveness: design and implement tools and processes to measure the impact of communication efforts to continuously improve outcomes.
  • Cultivate stakeholder partnerships: build trusted relationships with company leaders and key external partners to increase brand presence, promote product applications, attract potential investors & partnerships, and overall supporting all necessary company communication efforts.
  • Partner across CHAOS teams: work closely with CHAOS marketing, public affairs, government relations, talent, and go-to-market leaders to develop joint campaigns and integrated initiatives that reinforce a consistent, high-impact CHAOS narrative across every channel and audience.
  • Champion creative, non‑traditional platforms: think beyond status quo tactics to identify and execute bold ways for CHAOS to show up in the world—from podcasts, emerging and long-form digital media, and live conversations to distinctive placements with traditional media that reflect CHAOS’s inventive, nonconformist brand.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree with 10+ years of experience in communications, media, marketing, or public relations preferred.
  • Extensive experience managing and executing communications initiatives that align with company-wide goals and growth strategies, ideally in high-growth, complex, or regulated industries.
  • Experience leading communications during high-stakes or sensitive situations, including issues management and crisis response, with a track record of sound judgment under pressure and effective engagement with media and key stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to anticipate and address emerging issues, collaborate with stakeholders, and recommend effective solutions independently.
  • Expertise in crafting internal and external messaging tailored to diverse audiences.
  • Strong background in strategic communications planning, including establishing clear objectives and measurable KPIs.
  • Demonstrated success in fostering productive relationships with senior leaders, including executives and external partners.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Previous experience taking new technical products to market.
  • Communications experience within the Department of Defense or the broader federal government.
