Facebook Groups is the largest community product in the world, connecting over 900 million daily active users across 10 million+ groups. Groups contribute 20% of all content viewed in the Facebook Feed. The Groups Discovery team builds and advances state-of-the-art ranking and recommendation systems to help people discover, connect, and engage with the right groups and content—driving key Facebook App metrics.The Groups Discovery team is responsible for building the ranking platform, advancing Generative AI, and optimizing ML engineering solutions to solve key user problems and drive engagement within the Facebook App ecosystem.You will help tackle some of the hardest recommendation problems, including building robust group content/signal platforms, modern recommendation infrastructure, advanced modeling and delivery algorithms, leveraging Generative AI, and driving product innovations.

Director of Engineering - Facebook Groups Ranking Responsibilities:

  • You will drive strategy for, help set technical direction, and lead your team to deliver the following:
  • Group recommendation signals: Developing comprehensive group and content signals that power recommendations across Meta’s family of apps.
  • Recommendation infrastructure/systems: Building modern recommendation architectures to enable rapid ranking model iterations.
  • Modeling and delivery algorithms: Improving the relevance of Groups recommendation systems (e.g., Groups You Should Join, Groups Search, Invites) to connect people with meaningful communities.
  • Ranking connected Groups content on Facebook Feed and Notifications.
  • Generative AI: Leveraging new technologies and large language models (LLMs) to develop breakthrough products that reach billions of people.
  • Product innovations: Enhancing how users engage and interact with group suggestions and content.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 15+ years of experience growing and leading successful Engineering teams, with a proven ability to recruit, land, and grow both engineering technical managers and individual contributors
  • Strong Machine Learning background ideally working with ranking and recommendation systems
  • Ability to tackle problems ranging from technical implementation to strategic planning
  • Strong strategic thinking to identify new opportunities, risks, and priorities for the organization
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills to navigate complex, cross-functional teams
  • Ability to identify and drive new collaboration opportunities between product teams and external partners to unlock innovation and impact
  • Effective at driving strong engineering processes and fostering a culture of rigorous execution
  • High standards for code quality and product craftsmanship, elevating the skills and productivity of engineers around you
  • Skilled at resolving challenges through technical innovation, process improvements, or collaboration with technical leads and managers
  • Demonstrated ability to influence senior product and engineering leadership
