Let's fix hospitality, for good.

Hospitality is tough – margins are thin, waste is high, and teams are stretched. But it doesn't have to be this hard. That's why we built Nory.

Our CEO, Conor, knows the pain first-hand. After founding and scaling Mad Egg in Ireland, he got fed up with juggling "market-leading" systems, clunky spreadsheets, and endless printouts. So he set out to build the tool he wished he'd had from day one.

Nory is an all-knowing restaurant management system. It blends real-time data with AI predictive analytics, giving operators control of their margins. From food prep to forecasting, it's operational intelligence that helps restaurants run with consistency, certainty, and profit. The result? Thriving restaurants, better jobs, less waste, healthier margins. Learn more about what we are building here.

And we're just getting started. Fresh off a Series B led by Kinnevik, we've grown to 100+ people across Ireland, the UK, Spain and recently, New York – and demand is scaling faster than we ever imagined.

The role

We're looking for a Staff Engineer to join Nory and help drive the most critical, ambiguous and technically complex problems across our product and platform. This is a high-impact engineering role for someone who can increase the effectiveness of multiple streams of work - shaping technical direction, influencing product decisions, and enabling teams to move faster and more effectively.

This is backend-leaning full-stack. Your centre of gravity is in backend systems, architecture, infrastructure and complex product development - with the ability to contribute across the stack when needed. But this isn't just a software engineering role. It's a product engineering role. That distinction matters.

You won't just solve hard technical problems. You'll help decide which problems are worth solving, shape how we approach them, and bring others with you. You'll work through ambiguity, influence roadmaps, and turn broad business goals into scalable solutions. Deep technical judgment paired with strong product instincts. That's what we're after.

You must have the right to work in the UK or the EU without sponsorship to be considered for this role.

What you'll be doing:

Our teams are cross-functional with clear ownership. You'll take on the highest-leverage technical and product priorities - often across multiple workstreams - and steer them from problem framing through to execution, rollout and iteration.

Key projects and responsibilities in this role include:

  • Owning the most complex and ambiguous problems across product and platform, bringing structure, clarity and momentum where the path forward is not yet obvious

  • Shaping technical and product direction in partnership by helping define pragmatic approaches, sequencing work effectively, and influencing roadmaps through strong engineering judgment

  • Driving cross-team alignment and execution on initiatives that cut across squads, ensuring decisions account for system-wide impact rather than local optimisation

  • Raising the effectiveness of other engineers through technical leadership, decision-making guidance, hands-on problem-solving, and clear communication during delivery

  • Improving the overall system, not just the local area by identifying opportunities across architecture, reliability, developer experience and product capability, then helping turn those opportunities into shipped outcomes

What you'll bring:

  • Backend depth is the primary bar. You've built and owned production backend systems, APIs, data models, and distributed services that real customers depend on. You can describe specific data modelling decisions you made personally, the constraints you were navigating, and why you made the trade-offs you did. .

  • You operate across the full stack. You've shipped full-stack features end-to-end, and you're comfortable doing it again.

  • You shape systems, not just squads. You've made architectural decisions with a long-term lens - balancing scalability, maintainability, and pragmatism. You identify foundational gaps before they surface and design systems that enable multiple teams to move faster.

  • You own outcomes, not tickets. You can point to things you personally shaped - not just delivered. You've pushed back when the problem wasn't well-defined, proposed a different approach when the original plan was wrong, and taken accountability for outcomes. When you describe your work, you say "I decided," not "we decided."

  • You've built in constrained environments. Startup, high-stakes initiative, greenfield system on a tight deadline - you've navigated genuine ambiguity, made decisions without perfect information, and shipped something real. You know what an MVP actually means.

  • You engage with customers directly. You've spoken to users, let that change what you built, and can give a specific example of when it did.

  • You create leverage across the org. You mentor, model, and unblock - you raise the bar for the people around you and make the whole team faster, not just yourself. You write with clarity, align across disciplines, and contribute to strong decision-making beyond your squad.

  • Communication and technical leadership. You communicate clearly with engineers, product managers and stakeholders, and can explain trade-offs in a way that helps teams make better decisions together.

Our stack

  • Python, FastAPI, React, TypeScript, Node.js, AWS (Fargate, Aurora, SQS), Postgres, MongoDB, Docker.

  • We're stack-agnostic in our hiring and care most about strong engineering fundamentals and the ability to ramp quickly.

What you'll get in return:

🌎 Remote-first working environment - please note you must have the right to work in the UK/EU without sponsorship to be considered for this role
