Job Description
As a Field Service Engineer you will provide advanced technical support to Rockwell Automation customers, the Field Sales Force, Industry Sales teams, and internal GMS personnel. The role involves interpreting complex technical information, delivering programming and application support, conducting system troubleshooting and fault finding, preparing accurate system specifications, and coordinating hardware and software project activities. You will also respond to emergency callouts and support customers on-site when required.
You will report to the Services Manager and have a hybrid schedule working in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Your Responsibilities:
Technical Support & Application Engineering
- Provide application engineering and programming assistance to customers and internal teams
- Deliver on-site consultation to resolve issues related to Rockwell Automation products
- Recommend corrective actions and troubleshooting strategies
- Conduct site visits to investigate issues, validate warranty claims, and support system performance
Customer Engagement & Service Delivery
- Promote awareness of Rockwell Automation service offerings
- Support product and system presentations, including design alternatives and technical recommendations
- Maintain accurate customer interaction records in RAMSES / CLARIFY
Product & System Expertise
- Provide feedback to Product Managers on product performance and quality
- Stay current with Rockwell Automation technologies through formal training
Operational Responsibilities
- Coordinate hardware and software system projects
- Conduct in-house repairs when required
- Prepare administrative and accounting reports as per Services Manager requirements
- Ensure responsible management of company assets
Field Work & Availability
- Travel to remote customer sites for extended periods when required
- Participate in the 24-hour standby roster for emergency support
- Spend approximately 85% of working time on customer sites, with an estimated 50% of weekdays spent away from home in Rockwell Automation–supplied accommodation
The Essentials - You Will Have:
5+ years of experience and demonstrate a strong technical capability in:
Automation & Control Systems
- PLC, software, and SCADA configuration, troubleshooting, and fault finding
- FT View SCADA development
- Industrial computer systems
Networks & Integration
- Industrial communication networks (EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, ControlNet)
- MIS/MES integration, including SQL database connectivity and reporting (standard and customised)
Industry & Application Exposure
- Experience executing RAMS solutions within the mining and metals sector
- Strong understanding of industrial automation products and applications
- ·Prior experience in a customer-facing engineering support role

- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Excellent analytical and fault-finding ability
- Ability to work independently and manage diverse technical tasks
- Team-oriented mindset with the ability to meet shared targets
- Competence in report writing
- Familiarity with SAP and Workday system
