Job Description
Join Rockwell Automation in a role where your engineering expertise directly shapes how we build and deliver our products. As a Component Engineer, you'll take the lead on high‑visibility insourcing initiatives and cost‑savings efforts that strengthen our global manufacturing strategy. You'll work closely with cross‑functional teams and suppliers to influence material choices, qualify new technologies, and drive smarter, more resilient component solutions across the organization.
You will have a hybrid schedule working in Mayfield Heights, OH or Milwaukee, WI and report to the Manager, Component Engineering.
Your Responsibilities:
- Serve as the Component Engineering representative on development projects and design reviews, ensuring component decisions support performance, manufacturability, and long‑term sustainability.
- Guide teams on material selection, lifecycle management, and risk mitigation to keep programs on track and aligned with global strategy.
- Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, sourcing, and quality engineering teams across regions to deliver cohesive, high‑quality solutions.
- Partner with suppliers to introduce new material technologies and support innovation in wire, connectors, wire harnesses, electromechanical components, and metal parts.
- Train and advise development teams on component engineering processes, standards, and best practices to elevate engineering excellence.
- Drive cost and productivity improvements by identifying high‑value, low‑cost component strategies that support insourcing, standardization and common architecture as well as long‑term competitiveness.
- Contribute to initiatives that improve efficiency and leverage advanced tools—including AI—to enhance decision‑making and accelerate development.
- Work with Fabrication Services to develop new parts and resolve material‑related challenges during qualification and production.
- Identify opportunities to qualify alternate materials in response to geopolitical shifts, lifecycle risks, or tooling transfers across global regions.
- Consolidate similar materials used worldwide into globally available, strategically selected alternatives in partnership with global sourcing teams.
- Review component changes for certification impacts and provide guidance on qualification plans to ensure compliance and smooth transitions.
The Essentials - You Will Have:
- Bachelor's Degree in Relevant Field.
- Legal authorization to work in the U.S. We will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.
- The ability to travel 10% of the time.
The Preferred - You Might Also Have:
- Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience.
- 3+ years of electromechanical design or component engineering experience.
- Experience with wiring harness design, connection systems, injection molding and metal stamping.
- Knowledge of connection system application and wire harness manufacturing processes.
- Experience with wire crimping validation, tooling, and processes.
- Working knowledge of UL and other agency certification requirements related to connection systems and wiring.
- Working knowledge of plastic materials and metals (brass alloys, steel, aluminum).
- Familiarity with component lifecycles and obsolescence mitigation strategies.
- Experience developing and executing a technical strategy that drives significant business outcomes
- Experience with SAP, Windchill, Silicon Expert, or similar PLM/lifecycle tools.
- Lean Six Sigma experience.
- Ability to communicate and collaborate across all organizational levels.
