About the Role

We are seeking a data-driven, commercially minded Network Operations / Payment Operations Manager to own and optimize our network of merchant acquiring banks, card processing partners, payment gateways, and card brand connections. In this role, you will act as the principal merchant-side account manager for our credit and debit card processing ecosystem, driving authorization rate optimization, interchange fee control, 3DS routing, and performance tracking across our card processing footprint.

You will sit at the intersection of Finance, Product, Engineering, and External Strategic Partners, ensuring our card checkout flow achieves maximum approval rates while keeping Interchange and Scheme fees fully optimized.

Key Responsibilities

1. Strategic Partner & Account Management (Merchant Side)

  • Serve as the primary operational and commercial point of contact for our portfolio of card processing partners (Acquiring Banks, Merchant Processors, Card Gateways, and Network representatives).
  • Lead recurring business reviews (QBRs) with key acquirers and processors to review SLAs, approval rates, technical availability, and processing roadmaps.
  • Manage end-to-end acquirer onboarding, MID/TID setups, BIN sponsorship management, PCI-DSS compliance verifications, and administrative operational requests.
  • Continuously evaluate the merchant acquiring landscape to identify new local acquiring relationships, intelligent routing tools, or BIN optimization opportunities.

2. Authorization Rate & 3DS Optimization

  • Monitor, analyze, and optimize global authorization and approval rates across all card schemes (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Discover, and local debit schemes).
  • Identify root causes for soft/hard declines, issuer drops, response code anomalies (e.g., Do Not Honor, Insufficient Funds), and BIN-level performance drop-offs.
  • Collaborate with Product and Engineering to design and refine dynamic card routing logic, intelligent retries, multi-acquirer cascading, and BIN-based routing rules.
  • Optimize 3D-Secure (3DS 2.0) configurations, challenge vs. frictionless flows, and SCA exemptions (e.g., TRA, Low Value) to balance security, conversion, and authorization lift.

3. Commercial Management, Interchange & Fee Auditing

  • Track, audit, and reconcile monthly partner processing volume, Interchange fees, Assessment/Scheme fees, and Acquirer markups against contractual terms (e.g., IC+ models).
  • Lead contract renegotiations, fee restructuring, and volume-tiered discount discussions with acquiring partners as card volume scales.
  • Maintain comprehensive benchmark models tracking processing costs, scheme fee rule updates, and interchange rate categories across card types, regions, and card products.
  • Identify fee optimization opportunities (e.g., Level 2/3 processing data, local vs. cross-border acquiring optimization) to lower total cost of acceptance.

4. Operational Monitoring, Incident Management & Network Rules

  • Establish and track core operational KPIs, including authorization success rates, processing latency, chargeback-to-transaction ratios, and refund turnaround times.
  • Act as the primary internal escalation point during gateway outages, acquirer processing degradations, or card network disruptions.
  • Monitor and manage compliance with card brand monitoring programs (e.g., Visa VFMP/VDMP, Mastercard ECM) alongside internal Fraud and Risk teams.
  • Lead post-mortem analysis with processor and acquirer technical teams following service disruptions to enforce SLAs and implement preventive fixes.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Experience: 5–8 years of direct experience in Payment Operations, Network Operations, Merchant Acquiring, or Card Operations within FinTech, e-Commerce, SaaS, or high-volume digital platforms.
  • Domain Expertise: Deep knowledge of the card-processing lifecycle, including Merchant Acquiring, Card Schemes (Visa/Mastercard/Amex/Discover), Interchange-Plus pricing structures, Network/Scheme Fees, ISO 8583 response codes, and 3DS 2.0 protocol mechanics.
  • Authorization Analytics: Proven track record of analyzing card authorization funnels, decline codes, issuer patterns, and implementing routing strategies that deliver measurable authorization rate lift.
  • Commercial Acumen: Hands-on experience negotiating merchant processing agreements, auditing Interchange-Plus statements, and holding processing partners accountable to strict SLAs.
  • Analytical Skills: Proficiency with SQL, Excel/Google Sheets, and Data Visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Looker, Power BI) to analyze large card transaction datasets.
  • Communication: Strong commercial and partner-facing skills—ability to manage acquirer relationship managers assertively while presenting technical approval rate insights to internal leadership.
