About Sarla Aviation:
Sarla Aviation is not just an aerospace startup; we are pioneers in the sky, dedicated to revolutionizing urban air mobility with our innovative Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (EVTOL) aircraft. Join us in our quest to transform the future of flight, driven by a relentless passion for sustainable transportation solutions. As part of our team, you will not just take on challenges; you will push the boundaries of engineering, technology, and customer experience, working towards something that has never been.
About the Role:
We are seeking an experienced Battery Engineer to join our innovative eVTOL aircraft development team. You will be instrumental in conceptualizing and designing advanced battery systems tailored specifically for electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Your primary responsibilities include battery architecture definition, failure mode analysis, supplier management, cell selection, and validation, as well as overseeing battery pack integration and ensuring compliance with system-level performance, safety, and quality requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
· Develop initial concepts and detailed designs for battery systems, considering aircraft requirements, weight, energy density, thermal management, and safety.
· Define and optimize cell interconnect systems for reliable, efficient performance and minimal energy loss.
· Conduct rigorous Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and define mitigation strategies for potential battery system failures, including thermal runaway, electrical faults, and mechanical integrity.
· Develop and recommend appropriate safety mechanisms, monitoring systems, and preventive measures to ensure operational safety and reliability.
· Research, identify, and evaluate cell manufacturers and suppliers to select optimal battery cells that meet specific aircraft mission profiles and technical requirements.
· Plan and execute cell-level characterization tests including HPPC, DCIR, EIS, calendar and cycle aging, thermal behavior, and performance under various operational conditions.
· Oversee battery pack design, including module layout, thermal management, structural integrity, and high-voltage safety features.
· Work closely with BMS engineers to ensure accurate cell monitoring, balancing, and integration with the aircraft’s broader electrical system.
· Ensure battery packs meet stringent quality standards through comprehensive validation testing, compliance with aviation standards (DO-160G, DO-311A, UN38.3, ISO 16750), and adherence to internal quality protocols.
· Provide critical support for battery qualification and certification processes with aviation regulatory bodies.
· Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering teams, including mechanical, avionics, flight controls, thermal management, and manufacturing, to ensure seamless integration and functional alignment.
· Document design decisions, test procedures, and validation outcomes clearly, maintaining records suitable for certification purposes.
Qualifications and Experience:
· Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
· Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in battery engineering, preferably with experience in aviation, automotive, or energy storage industries.
· Proven experience in battery system conceptualization, design, testing, validation, and integration.
· Familiarity with standards such as DO-160G, DO-311A, UN38.3, AIS 156, and ISO 16750.
· Hands-on experience with battery testing equipment, DAQ systems, cell cyclers (Arbin, Neware), and diagnostic tools (CANalyzer, CANape, PCAN, Oscilloscopes).
· Proficiency with MATLAB, Simulink, Diadem, Python, and other relevant engineering software.
· Certified High Voltage training (Level 2/3) is highly advantageous.
Personal Skills:
· Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
· Strong communication and documentation skills.
· Collaborative mindset with the ability to work effectively across various engineering disciplines.
· Proactive approach and strong commitment to safety and quality.
