About The Opportunity
We’re looking for a Sr. Manager, Mechanical Engineering to lead the hardware development of our next generation food automation products. You’ll be starting at the very beginning, taking a product from concept to production while hiring and managing your own team of mechanical engineers. We’re looking for someone with proven experience building mechanical engineering teams and leading those teams to develop complex industrial automation systems on very tight timelines.
The Impact You Will Make
Ultimately responsible for the hardware design and development of key automation products, both as an individual contributor and managing the contributions of other mechanical engineers on the product team.
Collaborate with Software, Ops, Culinary, and other teams to ensure the ‘system’ as a whole is meeting agreed upon product specs.
Manage a team of 3-4 mechanical engineers to accomplish product development goals. Establish a team culture where engineers are driven to see the success of their projects and accountable when things do and don’t go as planned.
Create and enforce systems to document design decisions and history.
Tackle the most difficult problems in the product development phase.
Provide technical guidance to other mechanical engineers on the product team.
Drive the design, prototype, and validation timelines to make sure the overall product development deadlines are hit.
What You Bring to the Table
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
At least 10 years of experience in mechanical engineering product development, specifically in the industrial automation space. At least 2 of those years at a staff or leadership role. Experience in warehouse automation or automated fulfillment systems is strongly preferred.
An engineering leader who can simultaneously own the most difficult parts of a project and also manage a team of others, fostering a culture of growth, accountability and results.
Strong knowledge of robotics systems, extremely comfortable working with robotics software groups and product managers to effectively spec out a product, and then deliver on those agreed upon specs.
Strong familiarity speccing and designing systems with standard industrial automation components such as gantry systems, smart conveyors, linear actuators, pneumatic actuators, sensors, etc.
Proven ability to take a design from CAD to reality, with as few prototype cycles as possible. When you order parts you are confident they will fit/work as designed.
Laser focus on timeline, taking pride in hitting deadlines and holding yourself and others accountable when things don’t quite go as planned.
Previous experience developing products from concept to scaled production in industrial automation or food manufacturing space.
Expert in Solidworks or equivalent CAD programs. Ability to establish and teach CAD best practices to the rest of the team.
Strong 2D drawing skills including GD+T that serve as the technical resource for the rest of the team.
This role is based in our Boston office in Charlestown, MA. This role requires a minimum of 4 days a week in the office, with additional days as needed based on project demands.
