Software Engineer I
Split Software
Harness is led by technologist and entrepreneur Jyoti Bansal, founder of AppDynamics (acquired by Cisco for $3.7B). The company has raised ~$240M in Series E venture funding, is valued at $5.5B, and backed by top investors including Goldman Sachs, Menlo Ventures, IVP, Google Ventures, J.P. Morgan, Capital One Ventures, Citi Ventures, ServiceNow, Splunk Ventures and more. Harness is building the industry’s leading AI-powered software delivery platform, enabling teams worldwide to build, test, and deliver software faster, safer, and more reliably. Writing code is only 30–40% of the engineering lifecycle — the rest involves testing, deployments, security, compliance, and optimization. Harness brings AI and automation to this outer loop, turning complex, time-consuming workflows into streamlined processes at massive global scale.
The platform includes industry leading products in CI/CD, Feature Flags, Cloud Cost Management, Service Reliability, Chaos Engineering, Software Engineering Insights, Internal Developer Experience, and API discovery, observability, governance, and runtime protection. Over the past year, Harness powered 128M deployments, 81M builds, 1.2T API calls protected, and $1.9B in cloud spend optimized, helping customers like United Airlines and Choice Hotels accelerate releases by up to 75% and achieve 10x DevOps efficiency. With employees in over 25 countries, Harness is shaping the future of AI-driven software delivery — and we’re looking for exceptional talent to help us move even faster.
About the Role
We're looking for an early-career Developer Productivity Engineer (1–3 years experience) passionate about helping developers work more effectively. You'll solve real-world problems in CI/CD pipelines, build systems, and local development environments while growing your platform engineering skills.
Working with experienced engineers and developers across the organization, you'll support the tools and systems that power our software delivery. Your success is measured by the problems you solve and the friction you remove—not just the code you write.
This growth-oriented role offers hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies, modern DevOps practices, and emerging AI/LLM tools.
Key Responsibilities
Developer Support & Enablement
- Respond to tooling issues, build failures, and CI/CD problems
- Translate developer feedback into platform improvements with senior engineers
- Troubleshoot local development environments, test failures, and deployment blockers
CI/CD Pipeline Support
- Maintain and improve internal CI/CD pipelines (Harness Platform)
- Support build optimization through caching, parallelization, and incremental builds
- Monitor pipeline health and fix common build/deployment issues
Build Systems & Tooling
- Work with build tools (Maven, Gradle, Bazel) to improve performance and reliability
- Contribute to internal tools: code coverage dashboards, test frameworks, artifact management
- Automate repetitive tasks through scripting
Local Development Environment Support
- Maintain consistent environments using Docker and containerization
- Create documentation and self-service guides for onboarding and troubleshooting
- Reduce "works on my machine" issues
Quality & Testing Infrastructure
- Integrate code coverage, static analysis, and testing frameworks
- Support quality gates that provide fast, actionable feedback
- Monitor and improve test reliability and speed
AI/LLM Tooling
- Experiment with AI-powered developer tools (code assistants, auto-documentation, test generation)
- Collaborate on piloting LLM-based solutions to reduce cognitive load
Collaboration & Growth
- Work with engineering teams to understand workflows and pain points
- Contribute ideas to tooling discussions based on observations
- Take ownership of well-defined projects with guidance from senior engineers
- Stay current with DevOps practices and emerging productivity tools
Required Qualifications
Experience
- 1–3 years in software engineering or DevOps
- Interest in developer productivity, platform engineering, or DevOps tooling
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines
- Track record of solving technical problems
Technical Skills
- Programming: Python, Go, Java, or JavaScript; Bash/Shell scripting
- CI/CD: GitHub Actions, CircleCI, Jenkins, GitLab CI, or Harness
- Build Tools: Maven, Gradle, npm, or similar
- Containers: Docker and Docker Compose fundamentals
- Version Control: Strong Git skills (branching, merging, PRs, code review)
- Cloud: AWS, GCP, or Azure basics
- Linux/Unix: Comfortable in terminal environments
Mindset
- Developer-first mindset—genuinely care about making developers' lives easier
- Empathy and listening skills
- Clear communication to technical and non-technical audiences
- Collaborative, eager to learn, and growth-oriented
- Takes ownership and follows through on commitments
Nice-to-Haves
- Kubernetes, Helm, or container orchestration
- Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Pulumi)
- Observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog)
- Modern web tooling (NodeJS, NextJS, Webpack, Vite)
- Testing frameworks (JUnit, pytest, Jest)
- LLM code assistants (GitHub Copilot, Cursor)
- DORA metrics or productivity measurement frameworks
- Open-source contributions or personal automation projects
- Startup or fast-paced environment experience
