Responsibilities
Regular Activities
- Perform monthly accounting close under US GAAP and quarterly close under local GAAP
- Conduct balance sheet and profit & loss fluctuation analysis to ensure accuracy and prevent material misstatements
- Prepare financial statements and supplementary schedules in accordance with local GAAP and company law
- Calculate chargebacks for data center costs to the Canadian entity
- Prepare corporate tax returns
- Identify and document temporary and permanent differences for corporate tax filings
- Analyze consumption tax payable/receivable
Projects
- Collaborate with the manager to develop and implement a company-wide strategy and process in compliance with the latest tax regulations.
- Lead and implement projects related to new accounting standards or tax law changes
- Manage tax audits
- Support the Transfer Pricing (TP) team in preparing the local TP file (e.g., functional analysis)
- Coordinate with internal auditors for SOX audits specific to Japan operations
- Provide accounting and tax advice to stakeholders regarding transaction treatment
- Manage sealing application processes
Staff Requirements
Background / Experience
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in finance or a related field
- US CPA or Certified Tax Accountant qualification is highly valued; partial completion of these exams is also considered
- Minimum 5 years of experience in the finance department of a foreign subsidiary, or 3+ years in accounting/tax firms
Mindset / Skillset
- Strong logical thinking, eagerness to learn, and problem-solving abilities
- Ability to identify issues and propose solutions based on accounting standards and tax laws, in collaboration with stakeholders
- Solid expertise in accounting and/or tax:
Accounting
- Conceptual understanding of US GAAP and Japan GAAP
- Hands-on experience with monthly accounting close
Tax
- Experience preparing corporate tax returns and consumption tax analysis
- Extensive knowledge and experience in international tax matters (e.g., transfer pricing, cross-border consumption tax)
- Experience handling tax audits
Internal Control
- Familiarity with US SOX is preferred
Communication
- Business-level English proficiency
- Ability to clearly explain accounting and tax matters in English is highly valued
Systems
- Experience with SAP is preferred
Industry
- Experience in software and/or telecommunications industries is preferred
Company
- Prior experience working in a foreign subsidiary in Japan; preferably mid-sized or larger companies
