YOUR IMPACT
OpenText is seeking an accomplished and strategic communications leader to serve as Senior Director, Executive Communications & Public Affairs to help build and protect company reputation. Reporting to the SVP Communications, the Senior Director will be responsible for building an open and transparent culture internally, while advancing OpenText's public affairs agenda through thought leadership campaigns and CEO communications.
This role requires a seasoned communications leader who has demonstrated experience shaping company narratives, partnering with Government Relations teams to advance public affairs initiatives and leading large-scale campaigns and issues. The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker, great collaborator, experienced people leader and someone who has earned the trust of senior executives.
The role is based in Toronto or Waterloo, Ontario and is integral to OpenText's global communications leadership team.
WHAT THE ROLE OFFERS
Thought Leadership
- Define and drive a thought leadership program that positions OpenText's executive team as authoritative voices on priority topics including AI, data management, data trust etc.
- Work collaboratively with agency partners to identify and secure meaningful placements, including editorial coverage and speaking engagements, that amplify the organization's strategic priorities
- Ensure thought leadership content is closely aligned with OpenText's public affairs position and company priorities, developed in close collaboration with relevant internal stakeholders including GR, IR and Legal
- Ensure consistent amplification of executive voice across owned, earned and paid channels
Executive & CEO Communications
- Senior communications advisor and content strategist for the CEO, providing support across keynote speeches, internal communications activities, stakeholder correspondence, media interviews and digital channels
- Prepare and develop clear and authentic executive communications materials that reflect the company purpose, culture and business priorities
- Partner with the Office of the CEO to plan and coordinate CEO communications activities and presence internally and externally with key stakeholders
Public Affairs Communications
- Develop and execute integrated communications campaigns that support OpenText's government relations and public affairs objectives
- Translate complex policy positions into accessible, compelling narratives for diverse external audiences
- Partner closely with the Government Relations team to ensure communications and policy engagement efforts are coordinated and mutually reinforcing. Note, this role does not carry direct government relations or lobbying responsibilities
- Lead communications planning for regulatory developments, policy milestones and government engagements that require a coordinated public-facing response
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with key external stakeholders, industry associations, media and influencers relevant to OpenText's priorities
- Assist in enterprise-wide crisis communication strategy, providing guidance on messaging, risk mitigation and stakeholder response
Internal Communications
- Develop and deliver a robust CEO internal communications program that keeps employees informed, aligned and connected to the company’s strategic plan
- Oversee CEO-led internal communications activity including town halls, listening tours, market visits and ongoing communication updates
- Ensure regional communications for location executives is aligned to company plan and priorities
WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED:
- 15 years of progressive experience in external and internal communications
- Strong executive presence with the ability to engage credibly and build trust with the most senior leaders in an organization
- Demonstrated experience as the primary communications advisor to senior executives, with a proven record of producing high-quality executive content
- Thorough understanding of public affairs and policy communications environments and demonstrated ability to develop communications strategies that support government relations objectives
- Proven experience designing and executing integrated, multi-channel communications campaigns across complex, matrixed organizations
- Exceptional written communications skills, with the ability to write with precision, authority, and adaptability across executive voices and content types
- Demonstrated ability to perform in high-pressure, fast-moving environments with competing priorities and senior-level visibility
- Experience in the technology sector, or the ability to quickly learn and confidently communicate complex technical topics
- Experience leading a high-performing communications team, setting priorities, managing budgets and driving operational excellence
